We the People

Introduction

This manifesto is an emerging document, collaboratively and consensually written by the members this web site. The content of the manifesto will change and evolve with time, as members contribute to it.

Thanks to the opinion polls running in this site, we can establish which ideas are the most popular with the members. Each section of the manifesto represents a specific subject on which the members have been polled. As more and more members vote, add new (better) options and create new polls, the content will also evolve accordingly.

Technically speaking, this manifesto is set up as a handbook which functions as a wiki: any active member can edit and add to it, subject to current site and member policies.

Opinion polls

This is a collectively editable wiki page. Be bold and improve it by adding any relevant information you may have.

The content of this manifesto is based on the results of currently running polls. Each page of the manifesto describe a policy position based on the results of one or more polls.

You can see the list of polls on this realm's front page. You can also browse all the polls by topic within this manifesto. Any registered member can express herself/himself by voting in existing polls, or even create new polls.

The opinion polls must be representative of the opition of the active members of this realm. It means that polls used to draft this manifesto cannot be open to anonymous users (non-registered members). There are polls that exist and that are open to any visitor, registered or not. Such polls cannot be used as a reference to draft the manifesto.

What would you like to use this site for?
We, the members of the USA realm at minguo.info, would like to use this web site to promote better voting system, promote democracy (within the US and possibly abroad). We also want to use this site and this manifesto to let politicians know about what we think on topics close to our hearts.

Democracy

This is a collectively editable wiki page. Be bold and improve it by adding any relevant information you may have.

What can we do to improve our democracy?
We want:
- public financing of all elections. Specifics for (public) campaign financing have not yet been proposed.
- people to be able to vote while knowing the candidates and understanding the issues. This implies an outreach and educational effort by the community.

What do you think about voter (photo) ID?

How to use this realm to "Promote better voting systems"?
We decided to:
- Create a directory of Politicians promoting better voting systems.
- Create a directory of relevant USA action groups
- Cooperate with like-minded web sites. However, the modalities of such cooperation have yet to be defined. It was decided to Support Black Box Voting. However, the most appropriate way for our (small) community to support Black Box Voting has not yet been discussed.

Which Election method do you like?
We like and would like to promote any weighted (point system) election method. As such, we like and support: Approval Voting, Score voting (a.k.a Range Voting) and Emocracy. We specifically reject the current Plurality voting system, as well and any ranked voting system like Condorcet or IRV (Instant Runnoff Voting), because of the great count-fraud vulnerability of their highly computation-intensive counts. (see this thread.)

What do you think about machine/computer assisted voting?

About the Electoral College:
We believe that the Electoral College should be completely eliminated. Instead, we support the National Popular Vote bill.

Right to vote and ballot access.

Taxes

Check the corresponding page in the Policy wiki:

Regarding taxes, what general policies do you favor?
Generally speaking, we believe that people's labor should not be taxed at all. Instead, wherever practical, behaviour that is harmful to the society (like creating pollution) should be taxed.
To the extent that there is an income tax, we prefer it to be fairly progressive, with the rich being taxed more heavily than the poor. There should be no tax on incomes below the mean. Government revenues should be compensated in upper brackets.

Environment

We recognize the fact that humanity needs its natural environment and the whole ecosystem to survive. We want to promote policies, and in particular economic policies, that take this basic fact into account.

We believe that all the natural resources of the Earth belong to the whole of humanity, including present and future generations. We also believe that it is in humanity's interest to protect the interests of other life forms, in particular that of the Animal Kingdom.

Policing the production and use of chemicals:
We believe that fragrances need better labelling. The sale and use of toxic chemicals should be better regulated.

About Global warming:
We want more research to be done. We believe that caring for future generations is more important than immediate economic returns.
We believe we should reduce the use of cars within cities, which will be beneficial on several levels, including reducing the emission of green house gases.

A poll about cars and urbanism.
We want to promote carfree cities.

Healthcare

Health and healthcare.

What is your opinion on abortions?
Based on the poll results, we believe that measures can and should be taken in order to prevent the need for abortions in the first place. For example, teenage boys and girls should be taught on the use of contraception which should be free and paid for by the Social Security.

Beyond that, we believe women should be free to decide for their own bodies and that abortions should certainly be allowed in the case of rape and incest.
